Hi I have recently taken delivery of a new computer. I want to capture a load of old Hi8 family videos & bought the ADS DVDXpress external capture device, as well as an extra external hard drive for saving the captures to & gold plated leads. There were 3 programmes included with the hardware. On disc 1 is Capwiz 3.5 & 3, and on disc 2 is 8. Disc 1 just will not read at all.
Disc 2 is fine & 8 has installed. I have been to the ADS website & downloaded 'CapWiz 3.61 with drivers', but when I go to run CapWiz, it tells me that 'the USB driver for CapWiz has not been installed. CapWiz will not be able to preview or record without a compatible USB driver installed'. How do I install these drivers? How do I capture? I'm pulling my fast receding hair out now!
If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it! The new drivers are included in the CapWiz install program, however it apparently MUST detect the old drivers before it will install the new ones. Try this: download the old drivers (the ones for Capwiz 3.5), and extract them to a folder somehwere. Then go to Control Panel/System/Harware and remove DVDXPress. Disconnect it and reboot your PC.
Plug in the unit again, Windows should find it. Don't let it search for a driver, point it to the folder you made. It should install. Then start CapWiz. Hopefully it will come up with a different error message, one that says your drivers are not compatible with this version of Capwiz.
If it does, it will then ask you to let it install the new drivers. Finally - and whether this works or not - contact ADS and ask them to send you a new CD. The ADS DVDXpress cannot handle unstable video so I hope you are using a Full Frame TBC otherwise you will have trouble. The ADS Instant DVD 2.0 is much more forgiving of unstable video so if you don't have a Full Frame TBC I would return the DVDXpress for the Instant DVD 2.0 Also please note that both devices are made 'poorly' in that they will easily overheat.
The solution? Prop the device up on make-shift legs so it is at least a couple of inches up off the table surface and then put a very small fan on it. Heat problem solved. Don't get me wrong I like both devices (the Instant DVD 2.0 more so) but they have their quirks. John 'FulciLives' Coleman.

Was running windws xp pro 5600+ amd processor and 2 gbytes ram. When updated system to vista 3000 quad core 4 gbytes ram windows 7 ultimate 64 bit operating system about 1 year ago they had a set of beta drivers for 64 bit.
That worked which I can no longer find. Cons: very poor custmer support.Hard to impossible to find correct drivers.for anything above XP pro.It is ashamed as they did have current drivers available and beta drivers for Windows 7 32 and 64 bit.My big question is if they are still going to sell it then they should support it and make the correct drivers available to all of us who are stuck with this product. And yes the beta drivers did work I recorded many vhs to dvd.
With no problems. Other Thoughts: Tech support needs to get busy and re establish the correct drivers for the new versions of windows and if not then send us somthing we can use.If you have not bought it then do not go to there web site and check to be sure they have the drivers you need to make this unit work correctley. Pros: Small size, and fast delivery. USB interface is nice feature.
Cons: BAD software. USB interface is hit, and miss. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it does not. When trying to capture a VHS tape off a VCR player, you have to make darn sure you have nothing else running on the PC. Also you cannot have the screen saver on, this causes the PC to freeze up! I had to start and stop the capture procedure a few times in order to get it to finally start recording, and then the audio is totally out of sync with the video, it's maddening. And last but not least, the quality of the recording is just OK.
Other Thoughts: All in all, this is not a good device for recording VHS tapes to the computer, there are just too many glitches to try and work through to get it to work! Good, inexpensive video capture devices don't seem to exsist anymore? Pros: Fast delivery from newegg.com (as usual) USB powered Small size is nice Cons: A bit over priced for what you get. This device was a bugger to get installed.

Audio is out of sync with video while recording off of a VHS tape. Quality of captured video is dissapointing, but that's what you get with this type of device.
Other Thoughts: As an update to my first review, I was able to install the device drivers like this: Plug the USB cord into the computer, insert the CD, open up the computer device manager, find the ADS device, click on it's properties, update driver, browse for the CD, chose OK, and it downloads, and sets up the drivers for you. Once I did this, I was able to start capturing VHS tapes to the computer.
One last thing to know, don't try to run anything else on your PC while recording from any video source, this will cause the PC to freeze up, thus stopping the capture process. I learned this the hard way. Pros: Small size USB connection Fast, newegg shipping (as usual) Cons: First of all, the provided software bundle disk would not install the drivers needed, it was like they were not there, even though they are supposedly included. Even went to the website to download drivers, this proved no good either.
Other Thoughts: I tried to install the software on my other 2 PC's, they did not install the driver's off the CD either. Maybe I recieved a bad disk? Maybe this software is just garbage? Maybe the drivers suck?
Now I get to RMA the stupid thing!
